Growing up too fast articles9/25/2023 ![]() ![]() Layla’s birthday bash had plenty of the expected moments: cupcakes, gift cards and a “Happy Birthday” singalong that sent her ducking for cover. Having occasional breakouts doesn’t hamper their self-esteem, and their confidence is a far cry from what I felt at their ages. Today, both our teens employ those tricks with the skill of pros. Back in the day, unless you were a makeup artist to the stars, you didn’t know much about contouring, highlighting, priming or creating special effects with your features. I didn’t have access to cosmetics that were both affordable and complimentary to my skin tone until I was practically in my mid-20s, but all Nia and Layla have to do is visit Ulta or Walgreens to locate theirs. More often than not though, having multiple choices is a good thing. ![]() We lucked out she showed up of her own accord May 21, a darling, precious addition to our household who personified both meanings of her name - “dark beauty” and “born at night.” Back during the last long weeks of my pregnancy, I remember hoping that not only would Layla and I emerge healthy from her birth, but that she could manage not to share her special day with any of the immediate relatives all born on and after May 20. It used to irk me when my mother would say how she remembered us as babies and could recall our first moments, but now I can certainly relate. We obliged her, watching in wonder at how this once quiet, chubby-cheeked baby girl is starting to bloom. ![]() Our youngest, Layla, just turned 14 and celebrated at her restaurant of choice with family and a handful of friends, insistent that we adults sit on the opposite end of the table because she had gossip (“tea”) to spill. On top of school wrapping up for the year, testing, choir rehearsals and dances, there’s Mother’s Day and multiple birthdays to celebrate. When the end of May approaches, we breathe a sigh of relief, because it’s a busy, busy month around these parts. ![]()
